Beautiful Blogging Party--Why I Love Blogging

It's here! The Beautiful Blogging Party hosted by Joy of Cupids Charm. Joy has asked us to share why we love blogging, so.........................

I love blogging, because it is a way to connect and share with wonderful people all over the world that I would otherwise never get to meet or come to know. It's a creative outlet and sometimes it's even a motivator to get a project finished—just so it can be shared with others. I've met many other bloggers, made new friends, swapped wonderful handmades, participated in a PIF (Pay It Forward), helped others with a couple of tutorials, inspired others—they tell me anyway, there a wonderful tours to take, soirees and parties to attend, recipes to share. I've learned so much from reading other bloggers shares of their lives and creations. It's a way to travel the world while sitting right here in my own home. It has opened new avenues for me and has truly been inspirational and immensely enjoyable. So here's to more blogging—both writing and reading!

As a little party favor and thank for you visiting my blog I would like to share with you a few vintage images that you are welcome to save to your computer and use however you'd like. (Be sure to click on them, so you can save them larger). And don't forget to hop on over and check out all of the other wonderful blogs participating in the party too.

Happy Blogging!

What's It Gonna Be?

What's it gonna be? Well your guess is as good as mine. I don't know quite yet.......

...except that it's going to be a journey. A creative embroidery sampler of sorts. Years ago young girls would make samplers as part of their schooling to learn how to sew and they were prided on how well their stitching was and the samplers had order to them. Well not this one. Now that's not to say that I'm going to be sloppy with my stitching, because I do want that part of it to be particular, but the rest will be creative reckless abandon! An exercise if you will in learning to let go and create. To go with the flow! I was inspired by Teresa McFadden of My Minutia, when I saw her fabulous creative sampler and I thought, wow, what better way to get the thoughts and creativity flowing. The most fun exercise ever!

So I'm on a new little sewing adventure. I started with a piece of beautiful Irish linen and a few ideas and went from there. This first little piece I decided to applique with a tad of embroidery and as I go I plan to add some hearts, paisleys, pansies, a crown, buttons, a hand, maybe a few embroidery scribbles and who knows what. We'll see where the needle and thread lead me. Already though I can tell you that I've thoroughly enjoyed the little stolen moments I've had to work on this little piece. I wonder where my needle and I will go next. We have lots of blank space to fill up.

Happy Stitching!

Blogher Ads

Wooo Hooo I got my Blogher Ad code today! I'm pretty sure I haven't installed it quite right, because it doesn't look quite right, so I've got to fiddle around with it a bit and see what I need to do. I'll also be going to a 3 column format--as soon as I A--figure out how to do that and B--find a pretty (free) 3 column blog template, so keep an eye out for a new look. I'm hoping to keep it simple, pretty and vintage and something that goes with my blog header.

In the meantime have fun clicking around the links in my Blogher Ad. It's fun and there are lots of neat things to learn. For now I'm off to fix dinner, watch Dancing With the Stars and then back here later to figure out to make it all work properly and look pretty--I hope!

Antique Thimbles Anyone

Aren't these beautiful! And they are for sale! Yup, I am selling off part of my antique thimble collection. Most of these--except one are all sterling silver and most of them are also all turn of the century or older. Two of them are very unique. The one in the front on the far left has a deeply carved floral design and it's stamped Merun or Merlin inside it. The one right next to it is a Simon Brothers scenic thimble. The 2 taller thimbles in the back are also Simon Brothers thimbles. The others I'm not sure about. Their prices range from 15.00 to 50.00 with 1.85 shipping. If you'd like to see more of them inidividually you can see them in my Picture Trail album HERE

Update--All Sold!

Fun Stuff

A few fun finds at the thrift store recently.....................

......this beautiful pearl and crystal bead necklace--for $4. It's long too and I love long necklaces. It was a bit vintage and a bit today and something I will definitely enjoy wearing. The little crystals are acutally clear and not tinted like they appear and it has some little rhinestone rings in there as well. What more can a girl ask for! ( besides chocolate and a loaded credit card!)

......and I found this cool little glass floral frog for a whopping .50! Can't beat that. I've been seeing these on other blogs being used as.......

....scissor holders! And I just had to have one and I lucked out. I set it on top of a little old jelly jar filled with my favorite old white buttons and it works perfectly! Plus it's cute! Not too bad for some inexpensive fun!

Bloggers Quilt Festival

Please come and join me for the Bloggers Quilt Festival held by Amy at Park City Girl. Currently there are over 370 bloggers who have shared their quilts. If you have a quilt you've made then hop on board or maybe you'd prefer to just enjoy the show. Either way it's a great way to meet new quilters/bloggers and have some fun! Below is the quilt I've chosen to enter for the Festival.

This is what I consider to be my first "real" quilt. I've done some baby quilts and rag quilts, but this is my first pieced quilt I've done and I finished the top-which is still waiting to be quilted--about 3 or 4 years ago. It's call Crazy Among Friends from a pattern by The Buggy Barn. I did it as a BOM (Block of the Month for our non-quilter friends) through my LQS (Local Quilt Shop).

A close-up of a few of the blocks. This was such a fun quilt to do and a really great technique combining a crazy quilt approach, using freezer paper templates, cutting your blocks in stacks and then shuffling the pieces to acquire different color combinations for each like block. It's also a great quilt for a beginner, because it is forgiving, so it's not so overwhelming.

This particular pattern is actually meant to be made between friends and then everyone trade blocks, however it can also be done by just one person as I did it.

I love the little basket blocks and there are about 3 different shaped basket blocks in this one. I want to make up the quilt in the same book that is all baskets someday soon.

Thank you for sharing in my quilt with me and don't forget to hop on over to the Bloggers Quilt Festival home and enjoy seeing everyone else's. I may see you there!

A Little Easter Decor

I don't think I've shared my Easter tree before and since I just got it decorated last week I thought I'd share it with you.

It's decorated with some awesome ornies, all handmade by friends that I've swapped with over the years..............

This cute little bunny all dressed up with a big ol' top hat is the creation of my friend, Neeners (Janine Jensen). The very likeness of the real Easter Bunny!

Vintage styled bunny I made from a old table cloth and gave it a paper, glittered basket.

I'm not sure who made this one, (sometimes they aren't signed and I forget!) but it's one of my favorites.

This darling little yellow chick is by Phyills Shows. She always paints the cutest things!

This sweet little clay bunny is an original creation by Debi Rice.

Another one of my very favorites is by Darlene Mariano. Darlene always puts the most attention to tiny details and always creates something fabulous.

Wooly eggs with all kinds of wonderful stitching--again I forget who these are by, but I love them all the same.

Wool applique by me.

Ruthie Rabbit also by me. She even appeared as a free pattern in the Jan 2004 Country Marketplace magazine. My 1st published piece.

Happy Easter!

Kate Buss and the Titanic

Today I stepped back in time as I made a trip to our local museum. I was given passage on the ill fated White Star Line's R.M.S Titanic. My boarding pass gave me passage as a 2nd class traveler. Who was I and did we survive?

For today on the Titanic I am Miss Kate Buss

Kate is 36 years old and boarding the Titanic with ticket #27849--2nd class-E Deck. Cost of ticket 12 pounds, boarding in Sittingbourne, England. Destination San Diego, California.

Kate left her home in Sittingbourne, England where she worked as a grocer's assistant in her brother Percy's grocery business. Kate was traveling to San Diego to be married to her longtime sweetheart Samuel Willis.

On Sunday April 14th Kate joined about a hundred other passengers in the second class dining saloon for a service led by Rev Ernest Carter, she noticed that people sang the hymns with great emotion and that some had tears in their eyes.

Kate had retired and lay in her bunk reading a newspaper when the collision occurred at 11:40 pm that evening. She thought it sounded like a skate on ice. She waited and listened to the engines reversing, when they stopped she went out in the hallway where she met her table companion, Dr Ernest Moraweck, who offered to investigate. Kate then went to the cabin of Marion Wright, whom she met during the voyage, awakened her, and together they went on deck. On deck there was little activity but they met Douglas Norman who told them the ship had hit an iceberg. They looked over the rail at the well deck where people were congregating, some with their belongings. Kate berated a passenger who remarked on how protective they were being of their property, telling him that those trunks might contain all they had in the world. Before an argument could develop Douglas Norman guided the ladies below for some warm clothes.

As the boats were loaded, Kate turned away, she couldn't bear to watch the evacuation. She, Marion and Douglas discussed their chances of rescue. A little while later she got into boat number 9. But Douglas Norman was prevented - despite Kate's protests - from boarding.

When the boat reached the Carpathia she was the last to leave the lifeboat as she was frightened of heights and didn't like the thought of climbing the rope ladder up to the deck.

When the Carpathia reached New York Kate was alarmed that passengers without people to meet them would be taken to Ellis Island (although none were), for this reason she stepped off the ship into the crowd. Kate was eventually taken to the Junior League House, a hostel for women. She was later taken under the wing of Rev S. Halstead Watkins chaplain to the Port of New York to whom the vicar of Sittingbourne had written.

(The above text in italics was found Here)

Kate and Samuel were married May 11, 1912 and later had a daughter they named Sybil. Kate lived to the age of 96 and died on July 12, 1972.

The best part of the entire exhibit was the boarding pass and making a connection with the person that you were given. Only 705 people survived this ill fated cruise and well over 1500 perished.

If you have a museum nearby it is a wonderful way to take part in history and to pass it along to your children and who knows what you might learn or experinece along the way. For today I'm glad that I got to know Miss Kate Buss.
