This Weeks Theme--Show Me Your Dressform

I have always loved dressforms, partly I suppose because they are a part of sewing and I love anything to do with sewing and partly because this is what my figure really looks like--underneath all the fluff I seem to have gathered through the years.

This is Betty. I found Betty about 3 years ago in a thrift shop in Florida for $50. I snatched her up as quick as I could and ran home with my new found treasure bargain. She has been a faithful companion in my sewing room and has made a cross country move with me, so I'm pretty sure she intends to stay.

This is Betty's favorite outfit--she only has 2. She forgot her hat for this picture, but she is decked out in all of her favorite jewels.

Here's a close up, so you can what she's wearing a little better. Betty is from the 1930's and is in excellent condition. Her fabric tends to be fragile, so I dress her carefully and keep her away from the sun. I love the wire cage at the bottom and her heavy cast iron roller legs. I think I'd like to find her a 1950's or 60's prom formal for her next outfit--something in pink I think.....

And here’s a picture of Betty in her other outfit--suitable for the sewing room I’d say. She’s a very good seamstress too.

Ok, your turn. Show us your dress form and please tell us a bit about her. What is her name, her history etc. Does she have sisters? Just fill out the Mr. Linky below, so we can all take a peek.

This Weeks Theme--Show Me Your Everyday Dishes

These have been our everyday dishes for almost 27 years now and I still love them. It is the Village pattern by Pfaltzgraff. I bought them in 1979, the year I graduated high school with the money I received as gifts and they went into my hope chest until I got married in 1981. Originally the set had a place setting for 16, but through the years and 3 kids I'm down to only 8 plates and I've lost all of the cereal bowls, all but 3 cups, 1 platter and a few saucers. I would like to start seriously adding to it and get back to my original place setting for 16--sure comes in handy when you have company. Yes they are my good dishes too, since I have no china--another thing I would like to have. Can you believe no china! It's been a good and loyal set of dishes all these years and I hope to use them for many, many more!

Ok, your turn. We want to see your Everyday Dinner Dishes however you'd like to display them and please tell us a bit about them. Just fill out the Mr. Linky below, so we can all take a peek.

Show & Tell Friday

It's been awhile since I've done Show & Tell Friday, so I thought I'd share something today.

I thought I'd share old treasures that are new to me. These are a few of the things I found on my trip last week to Ennis, Montana. They had some wonderful antique stores and I found this beautiful crocheted pineapple butterfly there. It's big too--it measures 21 inches by 16 inches. I'm not sure just what it was originally used for--I'm wondering due to it's size if maybe it graced the back of a chair or sofa at one time. Someone certainly put a lot of hours into it and I found it heaped in a box of other doilies and linens and decided I needed to rescue it and make it a treasure. I think I may frame it, but I haven't decided for sure. That's the only thing I could think of so maybe someone will have a better suggestion.

A few other small newly acquired treasures are the red and white potholder, old silver mirror, with a rather thick beveled mirror still in it with only a bit of the silvering deteriorated and a pincushion made from an old piece of a quilt. I love rescuing old things and giving them a new home and I love to think of who made the piece or who might have owned it and how they might have come to acquire it and what kind of person they were and how did their treasure end up for sale. All part of the mystique and fun of adopting someone else's treasures.

To see more Show & Tell Fridays hop on over to Kelli's House and enjoy what everyone else has to share.

Virginia City, Montana

I'm doing 2 posts today, because I've been trying to get this one in all week. Last Friday we took a little day trip up to Ennis and Virginia City Montana. They are two really fun little old time western towns.

We left home late morning and the weather was typical spring weather, cool and the sun was out with some overcast areas. We got up the road a ways to Island Park--still in Idaho and look at what their weather was like....... SNOW! And lots of it! It was coming down on fairly good too. And yes those are fence posts you see, so you can see how much snow they still have and this was on May 9th--with still more snow coming!

We did get past all of that and back to normal springtime weather and we saw literally hundreds of elk as they were migrating for the spring. There were also several hundred antelope as well. The trip was just beautiful with all of the mountains, pine trees, log homes and wildlife.

Here is a shot of downtown Virginia City. It's an actual old west town and these are the original buildings still standing today. They are being preserved and most of them are set up inside just like you would have seen them back in their time. You can't go inside, but you can look through the windows. Sort of like an outside walking museum. Below are several photos of the insides of these stores. I had to hold my camera right up to the glass and then snap the picture.

Wouldn't you just love to go inside this store! Look at the tin ceiling and all that white stoneware way in the back. The area isn't quite open yet, so the lights were off inside of these shops, but the pictures turned out sort of cool I think.

A milliners model

A clothing store. Look at those cute shoes on the counter!

Another view of this same shop. What a pretty babies gown.

Another dry goods shop. They all seem to have women's underwear displayed on their counter tops. LOL !

This was my absoulute favorite window of all! Look at that gorgeous wallpaper and all the pretties on the wall. The little white round thing is a pincushion.

Now for a front view of the same window. I want a pair of those boots! There actually is a real little shop here in Virginia City that you can shop in and they do carry repros very close to this style of boot and yes I do have them on my wish list.
When we go back I'll see if I can get some better pictures of things close up.

This little window was filled mostly with children's clothing and that handsome feller in the window is the husband sporting his new derby hat he has just bought in the mercantile up the street.

We also visited Ennis, which is just up the road from Virginia City and it's buildings are newer than these and it has several really nice antique shops. I bought a few little things that I'll share tomorrow and I also bought a treadle sewing machine that is 100 years old, but I haven't brought it home yet. We'll be going back up in a few weeks to pick it up and then I'll tell you all about it. I can't wait to go back. It was truly a fun and enjoyable trip!

How To Can Butter

How To Can Butter

Ok, so why can butter you ask? Well because, one you can and it's fun and two, because I am working on food storage and with prices going up and up and gas the way it is and just a whole bunch of other reasons and I got this butter--Challenge Brand--for 99 cents a pound and if I can it, it lasts up to 3 years, but if I freeze it--only a few months.

Isn't it pretty! I love the buttery yellow jars. This is when they were in the cooling stage, so you can see various shades of creamy yellow.

Ok, so how do you can butter? Here's what you do.......

Use a high quality butter--Land O' Lakes, Challenge etc. Some cheaper brands will tend to separate, but you can experiment with your favorite brand and see how it does.

Ten pounds of butter will fill approximately 11-12 pint jars. I prefer the widemouth, but regular will work too.

Sterilize jars then heat in a 150 degree oven for 5 minutes.

While jars are heating, melt butter slowly in a very large pot ( I had to use 2 pots), until it comes to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 5 minutes.

Pour melted butter carefully into heated jars. Jars will seal as they cool. After jars have cooled for a couple of hours or til they are room temperature to the touch, give the jars a swirl to help prevent separation, being careful not to tip jars to the side, so nothing runs under the rim to break the seal.

Place jars in the fridge for several hours or overnight to allow butter to set back up. After they have set, remove from fridge, label them and store in pantry. Butter will store at room temperature for up to 3 years.

This Weeks Theme--Show Me Your Bulletin Board

I love my bulletin board. I bought an inexpensive mirror and replaced it with a piece of styrofoam insulation that I cut to size and covered with a pretty fabric. It was inspired by Jo Packham's bulletin board in her book "Where Women Create". Pretty much I use it to hang things up that I enjoy rather than notes, although a few of those do make it there on occasion.

Your turn. We'd love to see your bulletin board however messy or neat, big or small, fancy or not so fancy.

It's My One Year Blogversary!

Happy Blog-versary to me!

I'd pretty much forgotten about it, but one year ago today I started blogging and it's been a very fun year! I've been a bit unorganized and busy recently, so I haven't even had time to plan a giveaway, but be watching for one. We'll do one here before the month is out. I promise!

I have so appreciated all of your wonderful comments. I may not reply to them all, but I do read and enjoy each and every one. Thank you!

I think I have the blog revamping done with maybe a tweak here and there yet to do. You may have noticed my blog roll is missing. I've moved it to its very own blog roll. I had way to many blogs I wanted to add to this page, so it now has a new home and I will be adding to it as I find more and more wonderful blogs to enjoy.

Go check it out HERE.

I got the idea from Dawn Edmonds of The Feathered Nest Thank you Dawn for the great idea and for the wonderful blog that you share with all of us.

I've also discovered a new way to keep track of reading all those awesome blogs out there. It's through Bloglines . It's free and very simple to sign up with and just as simple to add your favorite blogs. It will show you when a blogger has added a new post, so you can save time and not miss anything.
Also if you'll look towards the top of the right hand column I've added a button for Bloglines, so you can add my blog to your list of blogs to keep track of it you'd like.

Thank you for sharing this first of hopefully many more years of happy blogging with me and as a small token of my thanks to you I'm sharing a few old photos and pieces of ephemera with you. Feel free to use them and please save them to your computer by right clicking and saving.

Here's to many more happy blogging entries! Oh and don't forget to join me here tomorrow for our new Show Me Wednesday. We wanna see your bulletin boards this week!

Revamping the Blog

As you can see I am working on my blog and I have a gorgeous new banner! I just love, love, love my new banner! It is designed and made by Jewel of Shabby Boutique Thank You Jewel!

I'm still playing around with the background color and am trying to find something in a pale pink or pale lavender with hopefully a hint of design to it--maybe some playful polkadots, but something that the text can easily be read over or maybe something vintagey yet with a fun flair to it--hmmmm...I know it's out there. We just have to find each other. This current pink--a blogger default color is way to pink, so I need something beautious! If anyone has any good places for finding blog backgrounds--free--please let me know. So until I find just the right one it may look a bit crazy here. I also have a few other things planned for the blog, but will let you know about those later. In the meantime please excuse my remodeling mess. Ü

This weeks Theme--Show Me Your Front Door

Here's my front door. Nothing special and it's in need of some decorating, especially now that winter is over and the weather is much nicer. I don't have a wreath or anything on it, but when you open the screen door it does have 4 little window panes each with old beveled glass. I couldn't get a good shot of it or I would have shared that too.

Ok, your turn. We want to see your front door--inside or out, whichever you choose--or both sides would be fun too. It doesn't matter if your door is plain or fancy, we'd love to see! Don't forget to add your blog name and addy to Mr. Linky, so we know where to go.

Next Weeks Theme--Show Me Your Bulletin Board

We'd like to see your Bulletin Boards fancy or not, cluttered or not and hope to hear anything special about it.

Also if anyone has any suggestions of what they'd like to see shared in future Show Me~Wednesdays please leave a comment in this post with your ideas and I'll add it to the list.

Down on the Farm

I thought I'd let you see what we are up to here at home. We have some baby chicks and baby ducks and we're waiting to get the garden planted. Spring comes later here in SE Idaho than the rest of the world.

This weedy part of the pasture is what the garden spot did look like. Aren't the snow covered mountains in the background pretty. On a clear day we can see the tips of the Teton Mountains and in case you're wondering--yes buffalo do really roam that pasture area to the left--4 of them in fact. They live right next door to us.

Ta-da! No more weeds--at least on this half. It's all been very neatly turned and tilled and waiting for our weather to warm up, so we can plant it.

The baby chickies--Mildred, Myrtle and June. They are Araucana chicks that will lay blue colored eggs. Now how fun will that be to get to bake with blue colored eggs! They're only 3 weeks old right now and they look a bit frausy since they are loosing their baby chick fuzz and getting their feathers.

Then we have Weezer, Wilma and Jemima (Puddleduck). The brown ducks are Ruins. They are the domesticated version of mallards with the mallard colorings, but they don't fly. And the little yellow duck--Jemima--is a Pekin duck and will be all white with a big orange beek when she grows up. These little ducks are just 2 weeks old and spoiled already!

And this is what my yard looks like today--all white with fresh snow--on MAY 1st!! This is why the garden hasn't been planted yet--hopefully soon--very soon! And that is Springtime at my house.
